Overall Creek Career Day

Let me let y'all in on a little secret: public speaking isn't one of my favorite things to do, I am actually horrible at it and I usually freeze up or my mind goes blank. So, when I got an email asking me to do Career Day at my daughter’s school I was a little hesitant, but Kaitlyn really wanted me to, so I decided it would be a great experience for me to get over my fear and do something for my daughter at the same time. After Getting my materials ready, a speech outline ready, and of course chocolate for the kiddos. I was ready and starting to get excited. I wasn’t sure what to expect and I was a bit nervous to be honest. But as I presented to each group of kids all my fears and worries vanished because each group was so amazing! They asked questions, they participated and each child was generally interested in what I had to say. The students were so inquisitive and full of energy. Some had ideas of what they want to be when they grow up and others where still considering. I told them to always have an open mind and they had plenty of time to find something they love. All the students were so polite and inviting to all the speakers I was very impressed with such wonderful manners. Hopefully the students got something out of my short time with them. Even if something I shared about my experiences made only a couple of them think about something they hadn't considered before, that's good enough for me. I shared some of my favorite photos, taught them about what a photographer really was, not someone who just take pictures but someone who captures memories for families. I let them hold my camera and even showed them how to use it. I took the time to show them my editing process and went through what a normal day is like for me. Photography is not just buying camera and taking a picture but something you have to learn – there are classes, workshops, tons of practicing to master the craft and skills you must have to make it in the industry. Editing software, you must know how to use, and a business you to manage. I was so nervous at first, but now, I can’t wait to do it again! It was such a rewarding experience and I am so thankful that I was invited to participate!
